The Engineer will want to take copies of the bid tab, a calculator, a letter opener, Notice of Award and a copy of the Bid Documents (including plans).

If the Engineer will be gone the day before the Bid Opening, put all of these items on his desk in a stack so that he will be sure to see them when he returns.
